2007-06-17 - London to Brighton Bike Ride

We did it! The 12 of us (1 tandem included) made it from London to Brighton - joining 27,000 other mad fools cycling the 54 miles (85 km).

In numbers, we did:
- 5.5 hours of cycling
- 54 km/hr top speed
- 2 hours of refreshment stops (big lunch!)
- 1 hour stopped in bicycle congestion!
(We must choose an earlier starting slot next time around...)

Yup, that bump at the end's gonna be a killer!

Cycle traffic jam
17-Jun-2007  11:28am

Finally out of London (which took about 1.5 hours - even though we were allowed to run most red lights, due to the sheer number of cycles) but into our first countryside traffic jam.

The climb takes it's toll. Probably 1/2 of the people were walking by this stage.

Marshalls before a steep downhill
17-Jun-2007  4:50pm

One thing we did see a lot of was accidents - some looked like they could be quite serious. I saw at least 2 people lying on the road with ambulance staff, plus more ambulances wizzing around. I guess with 27,000 cyclists all going the same place I suppose it's inevitable.

All around, the marshalls were great and very helpful; whether warning of "black spots", or cracking jokes - making a good spirit all around.

Some of us clocked 58km/h down hills. The craziest of all were the in-line skaters - they were barrelling down the hills as fast as the bikes! Wouldn't want them to hit a bump.

Oh boy, guess what we find...
17-Jun-2007  5:20pm

... yup another congested city.

I have to say, it wasn't until I got back into smelly traffic that I appreciated how wonderful it was cycling for so long in beautifully fresh air. Almost all of the roads were car-free for the whole trip. (Many weren't fully "closed" but most people knew better than to try and compete with 27000 cycles!)

I was surprised how many people / locals were on the side of the road clapping and cheering the whole way. The finish line was certainly no exception - made a big difference.

Hope these guys got a lot of sponsorship - they were BOUNCING the whole way there, on bikes with a one gear!
