Hanoi

The modern capital of Vietnam. We arrived in the small hours of Tet morning (e.g. new-years eve - but feels more like Christmas to us westerners) so everything was all closed up. We went and saw Ho Chi Mihn himself (on display in his tomb), where they also have preserved his house and offices.

Our group leader showed amazing hospitality by inviting us all back to her parents house for Tet lunch (think Christmas dinner)!! She has a kiwi ex-pat husband.

No, it's not the thunderbird's new headquaters - it's a muesum. This was the second time Ha when quite dramatically into history teacher mode again (the first being the Cu Chi museum). She was obviously very passionate about her country's history, and told it well.

We've heard stories of other friends going here and "not getting it". Yes, I can certainly imagine. Most of the displays are extremely abstract. However with a good guide, the museum transforms into being the pictures in a giant 3d picture book. As you walk through you zig-zag between an inner sections and outer sections of the building. The inner displays depict what is happening in Vietnam, and the outer sections show what is happening in the rest of the world. It tells of the life of Ho Chi Minh leaving Vietnam and working out how to reunite the country.
