Man, a lot can change when you just go away for a couple years... People are settling!

Pete & Gemma. Oh yeah! - classic NZ fish & chips. The English think they know fish & chips. They just don't know they don't know.

Lovely day up in the sky between Christchurch and Palmerston North. Pity it wasn't the same in either city.

I didn't take enough pics to do the place justice - most of the artwork around the house was all done by Mark (except the picture behind the glass doors which was a gift) + photography by Beck.

The proud house owner. I'm impressed - they'd only been there a few months and most of the house had been fully brushed-up all ready.

Man, their goat wasn't just tame - it just rocked straight up to me to say hello! I think it thinks it's human. Apart from the pine tree diet, that is.

Nick & Kylie also have a house, and kindly put me up as well.

I didn't get many pics, but I'm sure you can find more on Nick's or Kylie's websites.

Now in England, as a cyclist I can see the 4x4 (SUV) crazy taking off here too. Ridiculous. Is it the paranoid mothers or the rich 'screw everyone else' fathers wanting these tanks to protect themselves? babies? or just show off their wealth? It's not like these vechicles will ever get a speck of dirt on them.

In NZ on the other hand, 4x4's tend to get used for what they were built for... and probably none more so than Kylie's 4x4.

Anyway, I finally got to see her 4x4 for the first time...

... and in it we went up to see the Wind Power farm up near Ashhurst. This bridge was recently washed away in floods - you can see the reconstruction still on-going.

Driving up. Nick tells me they to contruct these, they designed special custom-built trailers to transport the large hardware up the windy mountain roads. ~10 wheel trailers where each wheel actively steers. (Correct any mistakes please Nick!)

This is cool. They've made a lookout / car park area on top of the hill, and right in the middle is one of the generators, so you can appreciate the size. Unfortunately you can only see it's shadow - I'll try and get a video on the website ASAP which shows it.

Click 'huge' to see the full sized image if you want to read the facts. A few:

55 turbines power about 32300 homes.
Towers 70m tall, each blade 35 m long.

If that doesn't mean much to you, think of it this way. The blades turn gracefully about 1 turn every 3 seconds. So the tips travel 220 m in 3 seconds, which is around 260 km/h.

I can tell you, when you are standing directly underneath that blade... then it looks fast!

Ah, my university city Palmerston North.

Hee hee, I had to take a photo: the 4 lane highway looks pretty busy today! They'll have to build some more lanes soon - it's getting jam packed on the roads.
